In OS X, for some reason the following javascript was not positioning the FireFox browser window to the top left of the screen.

window.moveTo(0, 0);

Solution

Not sure what causes the problem but it seems to work find if you position the window 1 pixel lower.

window.moveTo(0, 1);

Easy-to-integrate online website content management.

Adobe InContext Editing appears to be a move on from Adobe Contribute, disposing of the local application and providing a Rich Internet Application (RIA) which will allow you to edit predetermined areas of your web site, presumable defined by Dreamweaver-style editable areas. This it great as it will

• give website designers control over their design
• give website owners control over their content, anywhere with a web connection

Adobe have published only a limited amount of information on their site at present but do say that the service will use Flash and Javascript to provide an editor interface via your web browser.

I can currently find very little technical information about the service or ideas of pricing/license structures. Will it run directly on your own web server or will it work via an Adobe server, and as such will it be a one-off fee or will there be a subscription-based payment plan. At the moment Adobe really aren’t giving anything away.

Furthermore, I won’t be able to try it out yet as Adobe have decided to release the preview version only in the United States in October 2008. Why Adobe, why?

The answer is Google Toolbar. If you have Google Toolbar installed and the AutoFill option enabled, Google will remember your personal information so that it can automatically populate form fields for you. Fields such as name, address and phone will all turn yellow if AutoFill is turned on – the default setting.

Although it is good useability for these fields to be highlighted in some way, as a web designer you may not want yellow form fields on your web page for aesthetic reasons.

So, how do you override it…?

For a while I was confused as changing the name of the form fields seems to have no effect – Google still thinks it can auto-complete that field. It turns out that Google actually ‘guesses’ which fields it can complete based on the form field name AND adjacent text which it presumes could be a label!

In the end I found two solutions:

Solution 1.

Create a style to change change the background colour of the field, using the css !important rule.

input { background-color:#FFFFFF !important; }

Solution 2.

Use javascript to remove or change the styles that the Toolbar adds after the page has loaded.

Using this method you can change the background colour of all the fields, or just change the highlighted fields to a different colour to be in-keeping with your design.

Sounds easy doesn’t it!
However, I find that this doesn’t always work, particularly if you are viewing Flash sites, so I tend to follow this slightly more lengthy procedure which usually works.

1. Close all open Safari windows
2. Click on the “Safari”? menu
3. Select “Empty Cache…”
4. Quit Safari
5. Relaunch Safari
6. Optionally, select “Empty Cache…” again, just to make sure

Internet Explorer (IE) 7.x (Windows):

1. Under the Tools menu at the top of your browser, select Internet Options.
2. Click the General tab.
3. In the Browsing History section of the General tab, click the Delete button.
4. Under Temporary Internet Files, select the “Delete Files…” button.
5. A dialog box will appear that says, “Are you sure you want to delete all temporary Internet Explorer files?” Click the Yes button.
6. In the History section of the General tab, click the Clear History button. A dialog box will appear that says, “Are you sure you want Windows to delete your history of visited Web sites?”?
7. Click the YES button.
8. Click close to leave the Browsing History section.
9. Click OK to leave Internet Options.
10. Click the Refresh button at the top of the browser

Internet Explorer (IE) 6.x (Windows):

Tip: If you’re running out of hard disk space, you could reduce percent of disk space used by Explorer 3.x for its cache by sliding the “Amount of disk space to use”? guage.

Tip: Although it’s not required by all browsers, it is a good idea to restart your browser after clearing the cache. If you’re using Internet Explorer it’s sometimes better to restart your computer as well.

3. Expand the ‘Advanced’ menu by clicking the plus sign

3. In the Temporary Internet files section, click the Delete Files button. A dialog box will appear that says, ‘Delete all files in the Temporary Internet files’. Click the OK button.
4. In the History section, click the Clear History button. A dialog box will appear that asks, ‘Are you sure you want Windows to delete your history of visited Web sites?’ Click Yes.
5. Click OK to leave the AOL Internet Properties dialog box.
6. Close the Settings window.
7. Exit and restart America Online.

America Online (AOL) 7.x and 8.x:

1. Click Settings on the AOL toolbar. Then select Preferences.
2. Select Toolbar & Sound:
3. Click Clear History Trail Now. A dialog box will appear asking: ‘This will delete all of the areas you have visited. Do you want to continue?’ Click Yes. Click Save.
4. Select Internet Properties (WWW):.

6. In the Temporary Internet files section, click the Delete Files button. A dialog box will appear that says, ‘Delete all files in the Temporary Internet Files’. Click the OK button.

America Online (AOL) 5.x:

1. Under the My AOL menu, select Preferences.
2. Click the Toolbar icon.
3. Click Clear History Now. A dialog box will appear asking: ‘This will delete all of the areas you have visited. Do you want to continue?’ Click Yes.
4. Click OK.
5. Click the WWW icon.
6. Click the General tab at the top of the AOL Internet Properties dialog box if it is not already selected.

Netscape 6.x and 7.x (Windows, Mac):

1. From the Edit drop-down menu at the top of the browser, select Preferences.
2. A thread-hierarchy appears on the left of the Preferences dialog box. Click on the arrow to the left of Advanced.
3. Under the expanded Advanced portion of the hierarchy is Cache. Click the word Cache. This will change the right side of the Preferences dialog box.
4. Click the Clear Memory Cache button on the right of the Preferences dialog box.
5. Click the Clear Disk Cache button on the right of the Preferences dialog box.
6. Click OK to leave Preferences.
7. Click the Reload button at the top of your browser. (This button is to the right of the Forward button.)

Netscape 4.x (Windows):

1. Select ‘Edit > Preferences’ from the main menu.
2. Select ‘Advanced > Cache’ from the panel on the left.
3. Click the Clear Memory Cache button on the right of the Preferences dialog box.
4. A dialog box will appear that says, ‘This will remove all the files currently in your memory cache. Continue?’ Click the OK button.
5. Click the Clear Disk Cache button on the right of the Preferences dialog box.
6. A dialog box will appear that says, ‘This will remove all the files in your disk cache. Continue?’ Click the OK button.
7. Click OK until you leave Preferences.
8. Click the Reload button at the top of your browser. (This button is to the right of the Forward button.)

Tip: Navigator 3.x and Communicator 4.x users: If you’re often having to reload frequently updated pages, you may want to take this chance to set ‘Verify Documents’ option to ‘Every Time.’ This will make the browser retreive the latest copy of a web page even if it’s in the cache.

Netscape 4.x (Mac):

1. From the Edit drop-down menu at the top of the browser, select Preferences.
2. A thread-hierarchy appears on the left of the Preferences dialog box. Click to the left of the word Advanced to expand it.
3. The first item under the expanded Advanced portion is Cache. Click the word Cache. This will change the right of the Preferences dialog box.
4. Click the Clear Disk Cache button on the right of the Preferences dialog box.
5. A dialog box will appear that says, ‘This will remove all the files in your disk cache. Continue?’ Click the OK button.
6. Click OK until you leave Preferences.
7. Click the Reload button at the top of your browser. (This button is to the right of the Forward button.)

Netscape Navigator 3.x:

1. Select ‘Options > Network Preferences’ from the main menu.
2. Change to the ‘Cache’ tab.
3. Click on ‘Clear Memory Cache Now’ and ‘Clear Disk Cache Now’ buttons to clear memory and disk cache.

Tip: Although it’s not required by all browsers, it is a good idea to restart your browser after clearing the cache.

Your browser cache consists of items you have seen, heard, or downloaded from the Web, including images, sounds and Web pages. Storing these files in your cache can make browsing the Web faster because your computer will be able to display cached items more quicklyas it won’t have to download them again from the Internet.

All the files stored in your cache take up disk space, so from time to time, you may want to clear out the files stored in your cache to free up some space on your computer.

Also, you may find that if you visit a web site has been recently updated and a previous version of this page exists in your cache, your computer may display the page in your cache. Therefore you will be viewing out-of-date information – clearing your browser’s cache should fix this problem.
